Having never seen a buffalo up close before, I was struck by their sheer size-but what really stayed with me was the texture of their fur and the ruggedness of their horns. Unlike most pictures or representations I'd seen, these buffalo weren't perfect. I wanted to capture that wildness in this series by focusing on the burrs and dirt in their coats, which you can see here. As the moment unfolded, I knew I also wanted to capture his eyes—you can almost see into his soul. To me, this moment embodies the Icon of the West.
